Skincare benefits of Hemp Oil and CBD

In one of our more recent blogs, we were discussing the current trends in skincare ingredients and one of the trends that has taken the cosmetic industry by storm is incorporating derivatives of the hemp plant. Beauty and wellness products containing cannabidiol (CBD, the non-hallucinogenic form derived from the cannabis family) as well as hemp seed oil are becoming increasingly popular due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Trilogy Laboratories is currently developing skincare products containing hemp-derived ingredients and we are loving the results!

Hemp-derived products give you a natural skincare option that is chock full of benefits. In general, you can expect your skin to be moisturized, regenerated and revitalized after each use. Since hemp-derived CBD is so gentle, it can be used on each part of your body to help you achieve all-over results. Keep in mind that hemp oil by itself has a lot of skin benefits of its own, (mostly because of the fatty components) but it does not contain CBD unless it has been specifically added.  Hemp oil is made from the seed of the hemp plant whereas CBD comes from the flower. Also, it’s important to know that CBD from the hemp plant (unlike the marijuana plant) is legal in all 50 states.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ and it absorbs what we put onto it. Today, many mainstream skincare products are made with potentially harmful synthetic or harsh chemicals. And labels claiming to be “natural” or “organic” can be extremely misleading. It’s important to pay close attention to the ingredients listed on these products because your skin could be directly absorbing harmful chemicals.

By simply switching products and incorporating more natural ingredients into your skincare routine you can improve the quality of what you are delivering to your skin. One word of warning though—just because something is natural doesn’t make it good for you. Think about Poison Ivy! You wouldn’t want to slather your skin with a lotion containing that, now would you?

Cannabis-derived products are becoming a BFF for holistic types because they can potentially help relieve pain! CBD has a soothing effect on the skin as it binds to a special set of receptors which help relieve feelings of heat, itch and pain. Just as other natural oils are used in skin care, the natural fatty acids and antioxidants in hempseed oil make it a good choice for people with dry skin and eczema.

Try hemp oil and CBD on these body parts to see some incredible results!

Face: Products like a CBD lotion or serum can help in fighting acne and reducing the redness of pimples. In addition, CBD may give your skin a more youthful appearance, thanks to its inflammation-fighting abilities.

Lips: Our lips are a part of our skin so it’s important to make sure they are carefully protected like the rest of our body. One of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your lips is by using products containing hemp-derived CBD or hemp oil. Hemp is the only plant that contains vitamin D, which is a key ingredient for beautiful looking skin.

Hands: Safe for even the most sensitive hands, hemp-derived oil protects against external elements. Using a hemp hand cream before leaving the house saves your skin from harsh weather conditions that could potentially dry and damage your skin. Hemp oil contains vitamin E and antioxidants, aiding it’s moisturizing and anti-aging features. It is also high in linoleic acid, which is responsible for keeping skin supple. Using hemp oil on your hands makes them softer while also being naturally antibiotic and antifungal. With the Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acid content, this oil helps regenerate the skin’s protective layer.

Body: CBD products can be used on the body to ease muscular aches, reduce swelling, and ease pain. The high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids in hemp oil treat eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions. Vitamin E, which is also present in hemp-derived oil, boosts skin’s UV defense and neutralizes damaging free radicals. Using CBD or hemp oil products can increase your skins elasticity and water retention capacity.

As you can see, CBD and hemp oil are great options because of the ability to target a variety of problems simultaneously while being gentle and soothing. Keep an eye out for Trilogy Laboratories’ CBD skincare products so you too can experience all the wonderful benefits!

Trends in skin care ingredients

As we mentioned in our previous blog, we recently attended the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists meeting in New York City and learned all about the latest innovations, revelations and trends. Now that we’ve discussed and taken you through what’s trending in skin care, let’s take a look at trends in skin care ingredients.

Clean skin care products – Fewer ingredients means a cleaner product. This is more than just a trend –  it is a shift. Clean and natural skin care is important to the consumer and continues to grow in popularity. Since there are no regulations defining what those terms “clean and natural skin care” mean, some companies tout that their products and ingredients are clean when, in fact, they are not. One thing you can do is take a look at the list of ingredients on the back of your everyday skin care products. The fewer the ingredients and the more you can pronounce, the cleaner your product is. Read the label next time you’re in the market for a new product. The long list of ingredients may surprise you!

Pre- and Probiotics – Every now and then, the skin care world gets taken over by trends and ingredients that people suddenly can’t get enough of. Some may appear to be unlikely heroes at first but have since gone on to prove that they truly are skin care powerhouses (like coconut oil, for example). Probiotics belong to that category of ingredients that may raise some eyebrows but can do a lot of good. Probiotics are live strands of “good” bacteria that are formulated to help your skin. When applied topically, probiotics have also been found to provide numerous benefits. Similar to how dietary probiotics impact your stomach’s biome, probiotic skin care products try to promote a healthy skin biome by influencing the types of bacteria that live on your skin. In order to keep those probiotics working effectively, prebiotics have hit the market. Prebiotics are food for the probiotic bacteria that help them thrive on your skin. Using pre- and probiotics together is a one-two punch! Some of the known benefits of pre- and probiotics include improving inflammatory skin conditions, strengthening the skin barrier and delaying signs of aging. There are now multiple pre- and probiotic ingredients on the market that aim to restore harmony to the microbiome of the skin and keep it healthy.

Cannabinoids – Beauty and wellness products containing cannabidiol (CBD, the non-hallucinogenic form derived from the cannabis family) are becoming increasingly popular. These ingredients have tremendous anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.  Hemp oil, which is loaded with fatty acids, also addresses sun damage. CBD products derived from hemp are legal in all states, those derived from the marijuana plant are not.  Trilogy Laboratories is currently working on developing skin care products that contain hemp-derived CBD ingredients!

We hope you enjoyed our two-part mini blog series on what’s trending in skin care and current skin care ingredient trends. Trilogy Laboratories is taking advantage of the knowledge we learned at the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists meeting and putting it to work. Keep an eye out for some of our new products containing these trending ingredients in the near future!

What’s trending in skin care

We recently attended the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists meeting in New York City, which is one of the most important events on every skin care industry professional’s calendars. It attracts thousands of the leading players in the market and has become the showcase for the latest innovations, revelations and trends. Here are some of the trends we picked up on during our visit:

Blue light protection – Protection against blue light is becoming increasingly popular, especially amongst Millennials who are looking for ways to protect their skin. Blue light, sometimes called high energy visible (HEV) light, is most commonly emitted through screens. It is the light from smartphones, tablets and computer screens that we are chronically exposed to on a daily basis. Excessive blue light exposure accelerates the oxidation process which elicits inflammation and damages the skin barrier making it more prone to signs of aging, uneven skin tone, dullness, pigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles. Fortunately, with this skin care problem, there’s a skin care solution. Companies are quickly catching on to the need for formulas that combat the effects of blue light. Expect to see a crop of new products that can help minimize HEV damage and, in some cases, even prevent it before it happens.

Pollution protection – When it comes to how many fine lines and wrinkles you’ll get, genetics are skin’s public enemy number one. But, number two? The environment. Everyone is aware of the damaging effects the sun can have on your complexion, but urban dust, smog, smoke and exhaust fumes can wreak havoc on your skin by causing irritation and inflammation, clogged pores and accelerating signs of aging. Urban growth is increasing so fast that by 2050 approximately 50% of the world’s population is projected to live in cities. Based on that fact and the effects urban-dwellers have seen on their skin, the desire for skin care products that protect you from pollution are on the rise.

Anti-aging in sensitive skin – Another trend on the horizon is the push for anti-aging products for sensitive skin. It’s hard enough to find effective anti-aging products. If you have sensitive skin, good luck finding something that is both gentle and effective. Since most anti-aging ingredients (think retinol, AHAs) work by speeding up cell turnover – which can make skin dry and flaky – they can wreak havoc on easily-irritated skin. But not all anti-aging ingredients are harsh, and even retinols and AHAs can work if used in a balanced formula. We’ve got great news for those with sensitive skin who want to reap the benefits of anti-aging products! Trilogy Laboratories is currently working on formulas with a balanced approach to fighting signs of aging while soothing sensitive skin. Keep an eye out for new Trilogy formulas within the next year!

Customized skin-care products based on genetics – Whether you realize it or not, your DNA play’s a big role in the health and appearance of your skin. With the advent of tests like 23 and Me, we are getting closer to being able to evaluate genetics and create custom, individualized products for people based on their predisposed skin conditions. Who doesn’t want that? By understanding your genetic predisposition to wrinkles, cellulite, inflammation, and other skin conditions, you can make positive changes to eliminate, reduce, or delay symptoms with personalized skin care products that are unique to you.

Getting doctor-like results at home – Another trend that is booming in the market is the desire to get “doctor-like” results from the comfort of your own home. Our busy lives allow for fewer trips to the doctor’s office, salon or spa, but our skin still craves those same in-office visit results. This presents a challenge to effectively balance strength and safety of a product that can be used without the supervision of a licensed physician or aesthetician. Luckily, Trilogy is developing some home treatments and peel products that are safe, reliable and provide visible results that can help between office visits. Check out our Revive Mask which is one of those products!

Now that you know what’s trending in skin care, stay tuned for the second blog in our two-part series to learn about trends in skin care ingredients!
