The cold and dry winter season is upon us! With the temperatures beginning to drop and the thermostats heating up, our skin requires a little more attention. It’s the time of year, even for those of us living in warmer climates, that our skin could really use some extra care and effective hydration.

Combat dry winter skin with these tips for retaining your skin’s natural moisture:

Exfoliation is key

It’s hard for your skin to absorb your moisturizer if it’s shielded by a layer of dead skin, which is why exfoliating is so important in the winter. Exfoliating removes the top layer of dead skin cells that make your skin look dull and dry. Always remember to keep it gentle though, as using harsh exfoliators will strip your skin of its natural protective moisture barrier. For sensitive skin, we recommend a mild fruit-based enzyme that gently removes dead and flaky skin to reveal a fresh and healthy complexion. Azul’s Gentle Enzyme exfoliator will do the trick!

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Find a moisturizer you really like, since it will be a constant companion during the dry season! Humidity levels fall during winter, and central heating dries the air further, leading to dry skin. Moisturizing every day will keep you from feeling the effects of winter. Trilogy Laboratories is currently working on a moisturizing spritzer that contains the miracle moisturizing ingredient Pentavitin, also currently featured in Trilogy’s Timeless Moisture product. Pentavitin is 100 percent natural and plant-derived. Its composition is similar to the carbohydrate complex of your skin, which is why our skin loves it so much! Pentavitin creates a moisture reservoir that lasts 72 hours after application. Studies have shown an increase in skin smoothness and reduction in flakiness after use. The spritzer will also have another incredible ingredient, called Detoskin, which is derived from the root of the peony plant. This ingredient optimizes cellular energy and protects against pollution damage, fortifies your skin’s natural barrier and reduces the negative effects of sun radiation. For those in warmer climates who still experience winter’s effects, this moisturizing spritzer will be the one for you!

Don’t forget the sunscreen

UV rays that cause skin damage, premature aging and skin cancer still make their way through the clouds, so wearing sunscreen is an essential step in your skin care routine, even during winter. There are two kinds of sunscreen that provide either a chemical or a physical barrier. Mineral-based sunscreens use ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These physical, rather than chemical, sunscreens are not absorbed by the skin and instead act like a mirror reflecting the sun’s rays. Mineral-based sunscreens are more natural. They don’t contain chemicals and they also provide the best protection.

We hope these tips will keep your skin supple and smooth as you brave the chill this winter!
